How this works
Moodle serves a handful of files without requiring login, and their exact content changes from release to release. We fetch four of them — including admin/environment.xml and a built theme JS file — hash each one, and match the hash against a known set for every major version from 4.0 to 5.2. We also check the login page for a docs.moodle.org branch link, which encodes the version directly.
Support status then comes from Moodle's own published release table.
Limits, honestly
- No login, ever. We only request public, static files and the login page.
- A heavily customised theme or a blocked
/admin/path can hide the signal — you'll see “low confidence,” not a wrong version. - Only majors 4.0–5.2 are fingerprinted (5.3 has no stable release yet).
- We only claim the major version (e.g. 4.5, not 4.5.14).
